Happiness is our birth right! This is confirmed in the Vedas too, which is a manual on human life. The Vedas mention the term – anandomaya bhyasat – the soul is pleasure seeking by nature.
Someone aims to become a doctor, someone an engineer, someone an artist, a lawyer and so on and externally they may seem to have different goals in life, but yet have a common goal – that is happiness (or pleasure). Even the single celled amoeba strives for happiness by searching for food, assimilating it, producing off springs, etc. Up to the human form all living entities exhibit these characteristics. Hence, the ultimate purpose of every living entity is happiness. Therefore, happiness is an inherent property of the soul (and not of the body).
This can easily be understood with little intelligence. If a man is provided with the association of a woman body for enjoyment, he shall enthusiastically gratify his senses. However, if the same body without life is given, the person freaks out.
What is missing? It’s the presence of the enjoying (or living) spark, i.e. the spirit soul, which makes the enjoyment lively. Similarly a diorama of a woman placed in a cloth shop, if replaced by a beautiful woman shall definitely catch the attention of every trespasser. From this it can easily be concluded that it’s the spirit soul which is the enjoying spark and the attractive force, not the body itself, which is the medium of enjoyment.
The Bhagavad Gita defines the spirit soul as the superior energy of God and the dull matter as His inferior energy.
bhūmir āpo ’nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva ca
ahaṅkāra itīyaṁ me bhinnā prakṛtir aṣṭadhā
apareyam itas tv anyāṁ prakṛtiṁ viddhi me parām
jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat
“Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego – all together these eight constitute My separated material energies. Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is another, superior energy of Mine, which comprises the living entities who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature.” (BG 7.4-5)
Because the spiritually uneducated society identify themselves with dead matter (body), they try to fulfill their desires by taking shelter of the dead chemicals (matters). Every matter is made by the combination of earth, water, fire, water and ether. All are nothing but combination of these 5 basic elements in varying proportion. A stone is a simple dead chemical matter that has no entertainment for a living entity. All matter in this world are nothing but such different forms (cell phone, key chain, sports ball,etc.). By nature they have a beginning and an end, hence temporary. Therefore anything we can derive from it also is temporary. But the living entity is eternal, looking for eternal happiness and therefore when he tries to seek pleasure from matter, he meets dissatisfaction. Changing his shelters from one matter to other, the living entity imagines happiness that arises due to contact of 5 senses with their sense objects, to stay in his constitutional position, happiness.
This is called temporary patchwork over the perpetual miseries of life. The lack of understanding of this simple truth is the reason behind all the sufferings, madness, envy, jealousy in the human society, where hell has broken loose upon, seeing solution to crimes in theory or meetings only. Happiness can never be attained from dead matter.
Another absolute nature of material happiness is presented herein below:
Imagine drowning in bliss while enjoying one of your most favourite food item (say pizza). A true lover will surely desire somehow landing into a truck loaded with slices of hot cheese pizzas for mass delivery. Running on luck, say you just got treated with another pizza and are now fully satiated. On being requested somehow the last void in the tummy was filled too by swallowing few other slices and further yet were foolishly stuffed in, leading to a sick state. If yet provoked, the opposite person may expect a punch on the nose.
The same thing which we were hankering after, minutes ago, is now painful on over consumption. Rather, even the thought of the same food item arouses disgust. This is valid for all material pleasures including sex pleasure. The nature of material enjoyment hence exposed, answering the reason behind changing shelters in the human society.
The conclusion is, matter cannot ever satisfy the living entity even in eternity. If one attempts to abuse matter beyond limits, one meets bodily limitations while still hankering for happiness within. This is because happiness originates from the soul, not the body and satisfying the body is like caring for the cage (body) instead of the bird within (the soul). The modern civilization thus by hoarding various advertisement for their personal benefits, is brainwashing the human society with bodily identification and dragging the society into deep dungeons of ignorance that will further drag the society to a hellish existence, leading all to animal life in their next life. An intelligent person never takes interest in such pleasures and is always seeking for The Real Happiness.
